MagicDMX Installation, Connection Confirmation and Status Lights

Quick check if a MagicDMX gives no DMX output
Connect the MagicDMX to MagicQ PC, set MagicDMX Mode to DMX output (Setup > View Settings > Ports > MagicDMX Mode), and check the LED:
- Fast red pulsing: the MagicDMX is working.
- Fast red/white flashing: the factory self test (BIST) was missed. Return the MagicDMX through your dealer for replacement.
- Solid red with MagicQ open: likely an old bootloader. Contact your Dealer who you purchased the the MagicDMX from for a replacement.
Installation
MagicDMX devices do NOT need any additional drivers – they use HID drivers within the operating system. Plug in the device and start MagicQ.
To confirm the connection between MagicQ and your MagicDMX, please open MQPC,
- Click on Setup
- View System
- View Status
- Interfaces
- You will see "MagicDMX Status" listed as DMX out, and either Basic or Full, depending on what hardware you have connected. To check which firmware version is on the MagicDMX, see MagicDMX Mode under Setup > View System > View Status.
Status Lights
There are two versions of MagicDMX interfaces: USB-A and USB-C; the USB-C version is newer.
MagicDMX USB-C version:
Before MagicQ is open, a MagicDMX Full pulses slowly white then green, and a MagicDMX Basic pulses slowly white then red, while they wait for MagicQ. When MagicQ is open and connected in DMX output mode, the LED pulses red quickly, which means the MagicDMX is working. In DMX input mode the LED is blue: solid blue when no DMX is being received, and pulsing blue when DMX is being received. Fast red/white flashing, or solid red with MagicQ open, indicates a problem - see article 851 above for what to do. You can patch the MagicDMX LED if you patch a Generic 3ch RGB head to address 510 on Universe 1.
MagicDMX USB-A version:
When you first plug it in, the MagicDMX alternates between green and orange LEDs every second. When MagicQ starts and connects to the device, the green LED stays on, and the orange flashes faster as it receives data from MagicQ.
Demo Mode
When using MagicDMX Basic and MagicDMX Full interfaces, Demo Mode will continue to be shown at the top of the MagicQ window. This does not affect MagicQ programming or restrict output if you have a MagicDMX Full interface. Demo Mode does restrict some advanced MagicQ functions which are unlocked with MagicQ “Blue Hardware” (Not MagicDMX).
